Now this could be a real shock to hear at first that there is a nose growing on the forehead! “Oh this blogger is surely planning to bluff us!” – No surprise to this statement either! Just when the debate of whether or not science will be able to surpass the awesome creation of human anatomy is surging up and down, surgeons at a hospital will transplant a new nose grown on a patient’s forehead to his nasal spot in Fuzhou City, east China’s Fujian Province. The patient, nicknamed “Xiaolian”, 22, suffered a severe nasal trauma in a grave car accident in August 2012.
The only treatment he then received was a basic medical therapy rather than a plastic surgery due to financial distress after the accident. To add salt to the burning wound of course, infection followed shortly because of the absence of surgery and his nasal cartilage started corroding and it was impossible for surgeons to perform a nasal reconstruction.
However, surgeons came up with an idea of growing a nose on Xiaolian’s forehead — a medical practice never tried in the world. The procedure involves growing the nose by placing a skin tissue expander onto Xiaolian’s forehead, cutting it into the shape of a nose and planting a cartilage taken from his ribs.
Nine months after the growing began, the surgeons believe the nose to be in good shape and the transplant will be performed soon. “We have gone through the hardest step and now it is not difficult to carry out transplant surgery,” stated Guo Zhihui, Director of Plastic Surgery Department of Xiehe Hospital Affiliated to Fujian Medical University. He is confident that Xiaolian will start a normal life once a successful surgery is done.
